Bugs » URGENT domain.com/linkpage does not work for manual submitters

added on May 21, 2009 by jim
My link page is like domain.com/linkpage but there is no standard way to let a manual submitter know this.

I'm pretty sure that a AutoAdd from someone outside would have the same problem, it has no way to know where to check
for the recip link that I can figure out, no settings for one, am I missing something?

Someone submitted their site and they have a link page like domain.com/linkpage too, and they show up on my link page OK
but now I'm not on their link page because I'm sure that on their side their program couldn't find my link page or their
link.

Another thing, how can this be currently working for 3rd party link situations? If I was giving them a link on another
site I owned, how would they ever know to go check the other site, and if they Auto-added their site, how does the
AutoAdd script on their end know where to check?

Hi Jim,

the problem you describe above is a general problem for LinkEX, since there is no way for LinkEX to actually know where
the siteowner is including the output file.
Also since the webmaster can create lots of categories, the link can be present in one of more pages on the actual
site.
Normally when I need to inform the submitter of where the link is going to be present, I write it in the
"rules".

And you are absolutely correct with the autoadd and non-standard link placements. Currently the autoadd code will check
the response, and if it reads "Link added" it assumes it's ok. This ofcourse leaves room for cheating and
such, but with the problem you describe above it's hard to check for this kind of things.
At least it's better than adding all the info by hand :)

OK, but it wouldn't be hard to add a setting where you list ALL the URL's where the links could show up and the autoadd
script could just simply check all the pages till it finds the link. At that point it could enter that page's URL into
the database so when it goes to check it doesn't have to try all the URLs (and that could be added later, for now the
first part above would be good).

As for manual submitters, it wouldn't be hard to show the list of URLs in a standard place on the main submit page, just
to be consistent. Of course all this would depend on most people upgrading to your new version.

I think the autoadd part of that is more important, the number of manual submitters to my page seem to be low.

And the category thing... I haven't seen that many people using more than the default one, you could probably take that
feature out and no one would care.
